DEEP RISING
Review by Andrew Manning (12/97)

Release: 1998, Buena Vista
Starring: Treat Williams, Famke Janssen, Wes Studi, Kevin J. O'Connor, Anthony Heald
Director: Stephen Sommers
MPAA Rating: [R] violence, language
Genre: Action/Horror

SUMMARY

A group of criminals led by Treat Williams board the luxury liner Argonautica with intent to rob the ship's vault, which contains the passengers' valuables. They soon discover the ship is infested with a deadly sea creature, and they suddenly find themselves fighting for their lives. Picture Leviathan meets Aliens.

WHAT'S GOOD

If you're looking for an action adventure in the vein of Aliens where a heavily armed band is crawling through dank corridors being hunted by some freaky creature, this is the movie for you. Lots of people getting eaten, lots of stuff getting shot up. The monster isn't terribly original, but it does have the virtue of sucking out people's body fluids, making for some cool gory scenes.

WHAT'S BAD

The story has been done a million times by now. Anyone wanna place bets on who lives and who dies, and in what order?

Rating: 6 out of 10 (0=Abysmal, 5=Average, 10=Excellent)
